Pillar 1 · Basic provision

Basisrente: the biggest tax lever in your retirement plan.

The Basisrente (tax-deductible basic pension, often called the “Rürup pension”) is the subsidized base pillar of private retirement provision. You set money aside flexibly, and the state contributes generously through tax savings. Especially powerful for anyone who pays a lot of tax and gets no employer contribution.

What belongs to pillar 1

Your basic provision for retirement.

Pillar 1 secures your basic income in retirement. Contributions are tax-privileged during the savings phase, and the pension is subject to deferred taxation (taxed in retirement). The capital is locked in for retirement, but in return the subsidies are the highest.

Statutory pension

The mandatory insurance for employees. It remains the foundation, but for most people it covers only part of their accustomed income.

Basisrente (Rürup)

The private complement to pillar 1. You save flexibly and deduct the contributions from your taxes, the key lever especially for the self-employed.

Your tax lever

A small contribution, a big advantage.

One example shows how much the state saves along with you. Suppose you put 100 € per month into your Basisrente for 37 years, from age 30 to 67.

Total contributions (100 € × 12 × 37 years)44.400 €
Of which: possible own contribution29.395 €
Of which: possible tax savings15.005 €
Subsidy rate33,8 %

Model case: single, age 30, employee, 50.000 € gross annual income, NRW, subject to church tax. Simplified illustration based on the currently applicable tax schedule, not individual advice. Basisrente pensions are taxed in retirement (deferred taxation); your personal tax rate is usually lower by then.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

Who benefits most from the Basisrente?

Above all the self-employed, business owners, and high earners with a high tax rate who cannot use Riester allowances or employer contributions. The higher your tax rate, the bigger the lever.

How much can I deduct from my taxes?

In 2026, up to 30.826 € is deductible for singles and up to 61.652 € for joint filers. Contributions already paid into the statutory pension scheme or a professional pension fund (Versorgungswerk) count toward these limits.

Is the pension taxed later?

Yes, on a deferred basis. What you save in taxes during the savings phase, the state partially recovers in retirement, but usually at a lower personal tax rate.

Can I access my money before retirement?

No. The Basisrente is deliberately locked in for retirement and is paid out exclusively as a lifelong pension, not as a lump sum. That is the price of the high subsidies. If you need more flexibility, combine it with the private pension.

How big is your pension gap?

Work out in two minutes how much you'll be missing in retirement, and how much of it the Basisrente can close.
